Certified LEED Platinum

The Barnes Foundation was established by Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts. The Foundation opened a new 93,000 SF facility on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to house its world class art collection in May 2012.  As the civil engineer for the project, Hunt Engineering Company incorporated sustainable elements and techniques into the design of the 4.6 acre site, such as porous pavement materials, rainwater harvesting, a green roof and stormwater infiltration to aid with the Foundation’s LEED Platinum Certification. Three underground storage systems allow stormwater to infiltrate into the subsurface soils and reduce runoff from the site.  Excess stormwater runoff from the building roof is collected and stored in cisterns for use as irrigation.  Prior to the start of design, our land survey staff performed a boundary and topographic survey of the existing site.
